Sustainability at Luna Designs begins with using what already exists. From the timber we reclaim to the way we power our workshop, we try to make beautiful, useful objects while using as few new resources as possible.
Reclaimed Instead of New
The timber used in our frames has already had a life. We salvage wood from old buildings, furniture, boats and other discarded timber rather than relying on newly harvested timber.
Reusing this wood keeps useful material out of the waste stream while preserving the faded paint, weathering and marks that make every Luna Designs frame unique.
Powered by the Sun
Our rural workshop runs entirely on solar power. The machinery, lighting and tools we use to make our frames are powered by energy generated on site.
Being off-grid wasn’t originally a marketing idea — it was a practical way to run our workshop where we are. But it also means that the energy used to turn reclaimed timber into finished frames comes directly from the South African sun.
Water & the Farm
Our workshop water comes from a borehole on the farm and is pumped from the ground for use on site. Together with our solar power system, this allows us to operate with very little dependence on external infrastructure.
The farm also has an aquaponic system, where water is continuously circulated between fish and plants. It’s another example of the practical, low-waste approach that has developed here over the years.
Made to Last
Sustainability is also about making things that don’t need to be replaced. Our frames are solidly made from real timber, using traditional construction methods and materials chosen for their strength and character.
Because reclaimed timber has already spent decades — and sometimes much longer — in buildings, furniture and other uses, we know we’re working with material that has already stood the test of time.
A Luna Designs frame is made to be kept, reused and lived with for many years.
A Practical Approach
We try to make our frames in a way that makes sense — reusing good materials, wasting as little as possible, and making use of the resources available to us.
For Luna Designs, sustainability isn’t a separate programme. It’s simply part of the way we’ve learned to work.
