Luna Designs has been making picture frames from reclaimed timber in South Africa for more than two decades. Every frame is individually handcrafted from wood that has already lived a life — salvaged from old buildings, furniture, boats and other discarded materials.
We don’t try to make old wood look new. The layers of paint, nail holes, scratches and weathering are part of its history, and we preserve these marks wherever possible. The result is that no two Luna Designs frames are ever quite the same.
Made from Reclaimed Timber
Our frames begin with timber that would otherwise have been discarded. We reclaim wood from old buildings, architectural salvage, furniture and boats, choosing each piece as much for its character as its usefulness.
Faded paint, worn edges, old nail holes and decades of weathering are part of the story. We preserve these original surfaces wherever possible, giving every finished frame its own individuality.
Handcrafted in South Africa
Every Luna Designs frame is individually made in our workshop in South Africa. We work with the timber largely by hand, allowing the character, colour and history of each piece to influence the finished frame.
Rather than trying to make every frame identical, we embrace the differences in the reclaimed materials. It means the frame you receive is genuinely individual — no two are ever quite the same.
Made Off-Grid
Our frames are made in our solar powered rural workshop on South Africa’s West Coast. The workshop runs entirely on solar power, with water pumped from the ground — allowing us to produce our frames with very little reliance on outside resources.
For us, sustainability isn’t something added to the product afterwards. From the reclaimed timber we use to the energy that powers the workshop, it is simply part of how Luna Designs operates.
No Two Are the Same
The materials we use make every Luna Designs frame genuinely individual. Colours, textures, old paint and weathered surfaces vary from one piece of timber to the next — and we think that’s exactly how it should be.
Each finished frame carries a little of the history of the wood it was made from. When you choose a Luna Designs frame, you’re choosing the actual frame you see, not an identical copy made to look like it.
